Subway alternative from Penn Station

Use the E train from 34 St–Penn Station toward Jamaica Center to Sutphin Blvd–Archer Av–JFK Airport, then follow signs to AirTrain. 2. SEPTA and NJ Transit via Trenton

For the commuter-rail alternative, take SEPTA’s Trenton Line to Trenton Transit Center, then change to NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor service toward New York Penn Station. Continue to JFK using the New York connection above. NJ Transit does not provide a one-seat Philadelphia-to-New York ride on this itinerary.

3. Bus from Philadelphia to New York, then transit to JFK

Compare Greyhound’s Philadelphia–New York departures (opens in a new tab) for your date. Read the exact departure and arrival addresses on the ticket: a New York bus stop is not necessarily Penn Station or JFK.

Plan the route from that specific stop to your airport connection. Add time to collect luggage, walk to transit, and change services. Road congestion can delay the bus before you even reach New York.

4. Drive to JFK Airport

Enter your starting address and your airline’s JFK terminal in navigation. The distance and route vary; use a current estimate instead of treating 100 miles or a two-hour drive as a guarantee. Check conditions again before leaving.

5. Book a private car or request a rideshare

A direct ride reduces luggage transfers, but it remains exposed to traffic. Get a quote for the exact pickup address, terminal, passenger count, and bags. Ask whether tolls, waiting time, gratuity, and any late changes are included.

Do all international arrivals clear customs at PHL?

If PHL is your first U.S. arrival point and your flight was not precleared, expect U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing before you leave the international arrivals area. Follow airport signs and staff directions from your arrival gate.

Flights that complete U.S. preclearance before departure generally arrive without another routine CBP inspection at PHL. Where is the international arrivals area?

For a non-precleared arrival, follow the instructions to collect and recheck your checked bags, then complete TSA screening before heading to your next gate. My flight was precleared before departure

A direct rail link into the city

1. Take the SEPTA Airport Line to Center City

Follow airport signs to Regional Rail and board a train toward the city. The airport stops are Terminal A, Terminal B, Terminals C & D, and Terminals E & F. Follow the signed route from your terminal rather than expecting seven separate platforms.

How long does the Airport Line take?

Read the timetable from your airport boarding stop to your chosen downtown station. The ride to 30th Street is shorter than the ride to Jefferson; baggage collection, waiting, and the final walk add to your total. A single “25-minute trip” is not a door-to-door estimate.

Choose the right downtown stop

30th Street, Suburban, or Jefferson?

Use these as starting points, then check the walking route to your exact destination. Station entrances and accessible exits may affect which stop is most convenient.

30th Street Station — Amtrak connections and western destinations

Consider William H. Gray III 30th Street Station for an Amtrak connection or a destination near the Schuylkill River’s west bank. Do not automatically get off here simply because it is a major station; your hotel may be closer to a later stop.

Suburban Station — western Center City and City Hall area

Compare Suburban Station for the office district west of City Hall and hotels toward western Center City. Check the exit and walking distance, especially if you have luggage.

Jefferson Station — eastern Center City

Compare Jefferson for Reading Terminal Market, the Pennsylvania Convention Center area, and nearby downtown hotels. For Old City or a farther destination, plan the remaining walk or local connection.

2. Take a taxi from PHL to Center City

Follow signs through baggage claim to Taxis / Zone 5. PHL lists a $32 flat fare for one passenger from the airport to its defined Center City zone. The zone includes the core between the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers, Washington Avenue, and Fairmount Avenue, plus a specified area west of the Schuylkill. 3. Request Uber or Lyft

Pricing and driver availability vary. Compare your live quote with a taxi, particularly if several people can share one vehicle. Allow for pickup time and road traffic.
